'I’m enjoying the music very much. I think the strongest songs are the ones you penned yourselves. Very impressed with your versatility!!
I heard a track, I think it was “I Wonder Why”, on Iain Anderson’s BBC Radio Scotland programme. I stopped the car, took a quick note of the band's name and album and took it from there'.
(Iain McGregor, Scotland)
'Hi, your CD’s arrived here today. For a first CD the response here was WOW!!! I can tell you that three tracks will go out on Folkswagon this week. (This will be aired on 6 stations in New Zealand and one in Nova Scotia). If RISE are up and coming they are going to go straight past!'
(Tony Nightingale, DJ on the Folkswagon Show, England).
'Congratulations on a very impressive debut effort!'
(George Maida DJ, The Electric Croude Radio Show. WCVE. Richmond. USA).
'Like the recordings of several other contemporary Scots bands, it is a collage of contemporary rock, folk rock, and traditional music, juxtaposing true hearts, Scottish History and John Lennon’s Imagine. You can close your eyes while listening and imagine a higher theme of humanity.... “Time and Tide”... I could swear was Burns, but Burns would not have played guitar like this...'
(Extracts from Judith Gennets review of Uncertain Wonders. KPSU. Portland. USA)
'Rise is a very fine band, with a gentle and appealing form of contemporary folk-rock which reminds me to some glorious bands of the past, I mean Mellow Candle and Renaissance, but with a stronger traditional feel. The band can claim two superb lead vocalists, especially Debbie Dawson who has a really sweet and delicate voice which is a perfect vehicle for the strong and intense ballads such like “Maybe We”, “Thinking About You” and the superb “Time and Tide” which seems it comes directly from the great Scottish tradition.
As you may understand, I think “Uncertain Wonders” represent a very good debut and in fact I can’t stop listening to it these hours: Therefore be sure that I shall provide with playing your music several times in my next radio shows here on Radio Voce Spazio (Italy).'
(Massimo Ferro, DJ. Italy)
'I enjoyed the music immensely and feel you have crafted a wonderful record. I will play some cuts on my program which airs on WSCS FM New London, Radio 510 in Italy and on Radio 365.com. Thanks again for sharing your music'.
(Frederick Moe, DJ. USA)
'Early this week I downloaded an mp3 of RISE’s ‘Buffalo Song’ from efolkmusic.com and thought to myself “What a great sound! I must email the band and see if they can send me the CD”. Imagine my surprise when I open my mail the next day and there’s ‘Uncertain Wonders!’ Either this was a nice bit of serendipity or you have extraordinary paranormal powers! Either way I’m very grateful for the CD - It’s a real treat.'
(Lloyd Brady, DJ Fiddlestix. Australia)
'Debbie has a beautiful, haunting and soulful voice, the harmonies are lovely, the total sound is very good. I am sure that there are many of us at the station that will play the CD.'
(Halimah the Dreamah, DJ KHSU. Arcata, USA)
'I first heard of RISE when I visited one of my favourite (online) music shops - efolkmusic.com... I listened to one of the preview songs from the album... and I was instantly hooked. I purchased the Uncertain Wonders CD having heard only one song, and since it arrived, I have listened to little else. Not only is your music glowing with the great talents of the artists, but the songs reach for the listeners soul by means of lyrics which are emotional, cultural, and in some cases historical.
Keep up the wonderful creativity, and thank you sincerely for one of the most enjoyable musical experiences I have had in years.'
(Dave Chappell, fan. Washington, USA)
'For what it’s worth, I was pleased to make Uncertain Wonders my featured album on today’s program.'
(Bruce Cameron. Australia)
'This album has been in my CD player for the past week and has been played at least once a day - I am really amazed that a first album, from an independent band, not so close to the main Scottish music scene, can sound so damn good. Tracks 1 and 9 sound like they were produced by some of LA’s top song writers, these guys spit out hit singles as easy as saying hello - in short they are the best of the best. Yet these sounds are not coming from LA hit music studios, but from the Isle of Bute! Amazing....'
(Glen Clifford. Celtic World. Canberra. Australia)
'Listening to their first track, Buffalo Song, exposes the group’s pure and artistic talent that is found throughout the album. Their original compositions are excellent, capturing the depth and feeling of their lyrics. Highlander Radio was especially pleased to hear their original song, Cold Glencoe. With heart beating drums and stirring vocals, this song describes the massacre at Glencoe in Scotland some 300 years ago. We also enjoyed the traditional songs, Wild Mountain, Lomond and the best rendition of John Lennon’s Imagine that we have heard in a long time. Their fresh sounding music, and their unique ability to transcend the new with the old, RISE has created a fantastic first album that is sure to capture the hearts of many fans to come!'
(Highlander Radio. USA. www.celticradio.net)
'Well, what can I say? I’ve racked my brains for technical interpretation and descriptive phrases to articulate my feelings about the album but just one word keeps springing to mind - Beautiful. That one word encompasses every aspect of the album for me - from the hauntingly lovely vocals of Debbie to the production quality of the actual tracks - Beautiful.'
(Mark Edwards, Skidmark (Indie Music Internet Site). Shrewsbury,UK)
'What a wonderful CD... I hope we will be able to say “We knew them when...”
We will be adding reviews here in the future.. and your CD well deserves a great review. I am sure it has already received many...'
(David Austin. CDreview.com. USA)
'Uncertain Wonders opens with the Buffalo Song which slowly blossoms to great heights in which multi-instrumentalist Gerry Geoghegan gives it all. Melodic songs It doesn’t Matter are easy spurred together with real folk traditions Time and Tide with the beautiful voice of Debbie Dawson who gives the songs surprising turns. The heart rending Thinking About You and the springtime Wild Mountain are a good proof of this. A lot of thought has gone into each of the compositions. RISE is by my feeling a band of which we will hear more about in the future.
The band certainly don’t have to feel Uncertain because those who have the guts to mix modern music with traditional folk influences, can say that they are one of the founders of the new alt.folk generation.'
(Jan Janssen, Holland. www.radiowereld.nl/realrootscafe. Internet folk music site)
'Uncertain
Wonders' has been described in America as 'a stunning debut
album and it's getting a lot of well-deserved airplay around
the globe'.
'The first
time I listened to this album I heard so many things the only
way to properly introduce it was to feature it. This is a band
that, while completely of its time, weaves tremendous respect
for its influences throughout its music. Their music, though
very accessible, demands of a listener openess of ears and spirit
and intellect; and the rewards for such are very satisfying indeed.
An album PrivateRadio is proud to introduce to Florida'. (Sandman
USA)
'RISE are a band that takes the best of modern music and the
best of the tradition and come up with something that is unique,
full of integrity and makes you smile.
What more can you ask of a band?' (Tim Moon, BCB Radio UK)
One DJ in Sacremento said: 'I appreciate the craftsmanship
and artistry that goes into your music. Thank you, and I'm
looking forward to exposing my listeners to it.'
'A bright spot in the folk music arena that brings the magic
of Scotland to your ears. It's well produced and Debbie's
voice will touch your heart'
(Steven
John, Internet Radio Free Kansas, USA. www.tafcommedia.net)
'We pride ourselves in providing unique, independent material
like yours' (Ottawa, Canada)
'You are deservedly getting substantial airplay in Boston'
'This wonderful album arrived at my studio last week from
the Isle of Bute, Scotland. I'm still not sure where the
Isle of Bute is, but Rise's many fans probably haven't yet
looked up Sacremento, either. However, it hasn't stopped me
from enjoying the music. It does have a folk leaning, but
mostly its great tuneful pop which deserves a listen.' Lead
vocalist Debbie Dawson has a wonderful melodic voice, and
Gerry Geoghegan takes a heart-felt vocal turn on 'Great Big
Life', an equally heart-felt tune, as well as a few others.
Other standout tracks include: 'Thinking About You', 'It
Doesn't Matter', 'I Wonder Why' and 'Saturday Night'. (Twirl
Radio Magazine)
In checking the play lists of American Independent Radio
Stations, the band were suprised to find their tracks alongside
such artists as The Pixies, The Clash and Devo (!!!).
In fact, Rise have just made their fist chart appearance in
Milwaukie, going in at 12 ahead of The Chemical Brothers and
between The Hives and Joey Ramone.
